We often hear we are to love, and not hate.

Good advice. But as it is said, the devil is in the details.

It needs to be understood that when we love we also necessarily hate.

For example, we naturally associate loving to be warm with hating to be cold. Loving nice things (or 'nice' people) with hating to be separated from them. Biblically, when we love good we naturally and necessarily hate evil (Matthew 6:24).

Love is a fruit of the Spirit. But misplaced love is evil, as in the case of the love of money (1 Timothy 6:10). …
